IJILR requires footnote citation. In-text citation, endnotes and author-date systems are not accepted. Choose one style and apply it consistently throughout the manuscript.
| Bluebook (20th ed.) | US and Indian sources — the prevailing style in Indian law schools |
|---|---|
| OSCOLA (4th ed.) | UK, Commonwealth and international sources |
| ILI (Indian Law Institute) | Predominantly Indian sources |
Whichever style you use, every Indian judgment must carry the Manupatra citation or the court's neutral citation in addition to the reporter citation. Both identify the judgment uniquely and are the references used by the databases that index IJILR.
| Manupatra citation | MANU/[court]/[number]/[year] — e.g. Maneka Gandhi v. Union of India, AIR 1978 SC 597 : MANU/SC/0133/1978 |
|---|---|
| Supreme Court neutral citation | [year] INSC [number] — e.g. Case name, 2024 INSC 123 |
| High Court neutral citation | [year]:[court code]:[number] — e.g. Case name, 2024:DHC:1234 (Delhi), 2024:MHC:567 (Madras), 2024:BHC-AS:890 (Bombay) |
| Where to find them | The neutral citation is printed on the first page of the judgment on the court's website and on eSCR. The Manupatra citation is shown at the head of the judgment on Manupatra. |
Cite the primary source. Do not cite or link to CaseMine, iPleaders, Indian Kanoon or SCC Online. For judgments, use the court's website, eSCR or the official reporter; for statutes, the Gazette of India or the Ministry's published text; for reports, the issuing body. Secondary commentary from those four sites may not be used as authority.
In the final accepted version, footnote 1 is attached to the title and gives each author's full name, designation and institution, with the corresponding author's email. It is omitted from the anonymised review copy.
